Went to run Saturday morning and just didn’t feel it. I figured no big deal. Saturday afternoon I had no energy. Nor Sunday, on Monday I spiked a low grade temp, last night I woke up at 3 with severe chills, I ended up with 5 blankets on me. I hope it’s just a summer cold and not the flu. For the first time in 12 years, I actually thought of calling in sick, but I didn’t. I got 90 minutes left and I’m fading fast. It’s been nice to read of EVERYONES running and such but I’m getting envious. I’ll take a few more days off, summer colds stink!
A lot of time, I tend to use my weight and time as an indicator of how healthy I am, not necessarily the right thing to do. Recently, in an effort to save some money on my life insurance policy premium, I switched life insurance companies. I had to have a full health screening which made me a little nervous since for the better part of Jan thru April, I was not exactly the picture of fitness. Add to that the stress of a job change and I felt like I was going to get a rude awakening. My weight was up a little which I expected and my blood pressure was 134/84 which was slightly high. It really clarified to me that diet and exercise is much more than just fitting into a smaller size. Anyway today, I got the lab results. I am not boasting at all, and I wish I had some sort of baseline. I started my journey 3 years ago and I have lost 70 pounds ( net 50 right now). I feel better each day and while I’m not super charged energetic everyday, I definitely have more energy. These are the highlights from the lab report. Fasting glucose 69, total cholesterol 152, hdl 55, LDL 82. I also tested negative for cocaine ( that’s the only drug they tested for, well nicotine too). My heart rate was 62. So kids, there you have it. Actual numbers that show being active and eating healthy ( 80% of the time) does work in improving your health. BTW, I did get approved, and I am starting a new job with walmart.
Over the past 3 or 4 weeks, I’ve been slowly increasing my weekly mileage to the end of having a 100 mile month. I just about started over with a modified couch to 5k program but I really wanted to go slow and make sure the foot felt good. So after 3 weeks of 3 milers, then 4 milers, I put together my first consecutive 5 milers! Pace was at 11:37 or so (avg both days) so I’m pleased at where im at. My first 25 mile week (since last Nov) is at hand. It’s been a long road to recovery, and at times I never thought I would return to this level. Got a ways to go before I get back to 10 plus milers or sub 10 minute miles, but getting to this point is big. Also , our church athletic director asked me to lead a bible study/ running class. Super excited about that. Have a great Wednesday.
So the past couple of weeks (while continuing to regain my base mileage) I have been doing a lot of thinking about foods and where they come from. I have always appreciated that aspect of the food chain. For those who may not know, I have a strong background in agriculture, and still dabble in a little of the biz as it were. During my “tumblrcation”, I have really been thinking about putting more time into the production stage of food.
Hey, y’all! I have been off tumblr for the past month. I just needed some time away to reassess my goals and where I was. I’ll update more later, but just wanted to check in and let you know I was still alive.
The trouble with farm trucks is reliability. Broke down on the side of the road, waiting on reinforcements (aka my mom), I live 20 minutes from the farm that my mom lives on, so it’s closer for her. Unfortunately she’s also 20 minutes away. Kids are in good spirits though. Oddly enough it’s not uncommon for people to park on the side of the road so nobody is stopping. Ha
For the first time in a long time, I let my head keep me from running. Stress got to me and I didn’t feel like doing the one thing that woulda helped me. Let it go and move on to the next day.
Good news: consecutive 4 mile days
Bad news: in order to be home by 6:15 before child#3 gets up, I have to be out of the house before 5:30. ( I’m slow ), this all means I get up at 4:50. I’m not one of these jump out of bed and onto the road so waking up is tough sometimes. But you do what you gotta do.
